This article focuses on the events related to the construction of waterways in Italy and in particular on the projected waterway Ticino-Mincio, which should put Switzerland in connection with the Adriatic Sea. Ideas and projects in this direction had already been conceived in Northern Italy since early modern times, but only after the beginning of the 20th century initiatives actually flourished. Under fascism there was at first a slowdown of the projects concerning inland navigation, and then an expansion following the autarchic turn. However, only in the post-war period the idea of a waterway that crossed the Po Valley connecting Milan and other inland cities to the Adriatic took hold. The dream crashed at the end of the Sixties, even if the debate went on for a long time. The reasons for its failure are mainly related to the disagreements between local governments, and, in particular, to national policy schemes that gave priority to road transportantion and consequently to the construction of motorways connecting the North and the South of the country
