During the 150th Anniversary of Italian Unity, the society structure of Graffignana, a rural community in the Lodi region, has been pieced together, on the basis of the 1855-80 enrolment registers available at the town archives. In this community, agricultural labourers, land gentry and tenant farmers made up 80% of listed adult males. In a certain amount also members of lower social classes owned small properties. Industry was absent. The author asserts that the lasting large possessions owned by the Belgioioso family conditioned economic life and social relations in that period. Large possessions could also have concurred to a demographic growth, limited but higher than in nearest villages. Illiteracy attained a level higher than average values in Lombardy, but closer to national standards. Health conditions of conscripts highlight a large diffusion of diseases by lack of a proper diet. In Graffignana events of patriots participating to the Risorgimento also occurred.
