In this article my attempt is to show how the Hegelian conception of mental illness, of insanity, inserts itself in the line of thought that in the second half of nineteenth century discovered and begun a proper analysis of, the phenomenon of hysteria. Indeed, Hegel study of the psychiatric works of Philippe Pinel, allows him to isolate three main issues within the study of insanity: the necessity of mental illness in order to grasp the particularity of the sane subject; the necessity to outline a theory of unconscious; and both the relevance and the difficulty of the problem of embodiment. In this way thus Hegel begins to change the dominant paradigm of rationality within the analysis of mental illness, and this change is what indirectly permits Charcot and Freud to develop their views upon neurosis and hysteria.
