The enforcement of Fascist racial laws since their promulgation in 1938 was the task of offices and agencies constituted ad hoc, whose activity produced over a few years an archival deposit representing, despite serious voids, the main documentary source on a national scale for the Jews persecution in Fascist Italy. This study examines preliminarily the bureaucratic structures, the procedures for race ascertainment and "discrimination" acknowledgment, as well as the features and consistence of the documentation gathered during such activity. The A. then reconstructs the vicissitudes of the archive of the General Direction for Demography and Race, transferred in the RSI territory by November 1943 and soon later disputed with the General Inspectorate for Race, dismantled, stolen, hidden, forgotten or "repressed", retrieved and finally entrusted to the State Central Archive (ACS) in 1949, a remnant part still being given in no earlier than the Nineties. The direct assessment of such papers suggests to the A. some few hypotheses on the archive of the Inspectorate itself.
