This article explores two tragedies, Sophocles’ Antigone and Euripides’ Electra, in order to explore the parallels between psychoanalytic understandings and those achieved within the tradition of classical drama, beginning with that of the ancient Greeks. It argues that the exploration of the nature and dynamics of family relationships are central to both forms of inquiry and representation, and suggests why this is so. It focuses on the portrayal of sibling relationships within these two plays, as one particular form of kinship connection. These plays show that when such primary ties break dow, the consequences for individuals and society can be catastrophic.
