This introductory note to the volume Per una storia del sindacato in Europa, edited by Maurizio Antonioli (Milano, Bruno Mondadori, 2012), examines the most recent acquisitions concerning the various organizational models adopted by trade and industrial labourers in the different European countries. National diversities derive from both a disparity of economic and industrial development and the shaping of distinctive long-term organisational traditions peculiar to each working class environment. The latest studies also emphasize the coexistence of different types of organisations - among industrial workers as well as among craftsmen, as said before - well at the height of the 20th century.
