Applications and social consequences of automation are explored in factories offices, travel, banking, retail, safety and others. Automation is not sheer displacement of tasks from men to machines but a stage in the process towards integrated systems of processes, technology, organization, roles and values, where technology performs a large variety of existing and new tasks, and where interaction is designed among human beings and technical systems. Technology upsets work and organization but only design resets them. Social and technical methodologies take the opportunity of the always existing "room of manoeuvre" for planning, design, and experimentation of systems. Social dimensions in technological development are not effects but instead matter of design.
Keywords: Automation, technical innovation, social effects of automation, technologic unemployment, quality of working life, sociotechnical systems design, human centred design.
