Major Depressive Disorder is one of the most common psychiatric disorders. Epidemiological and clinical studies show that both depression and its treatments are associated with sexual dysfunctions in men and women, including orgasm and arousal problems, hypoactive sexual desire, premature ejaculation and erectile difficulties. Sexual dysfunctions are important and understimated adverse effects of antidepressant drugs and are frequently cited as a reason for noncompliance with medication, discontinuation of treatment or dropout from therapy. Antidepressants with strong serotoninergic activity (SSRIs and SNRIs) have the highest rate of sexual side effects. The aim of this review is to describe the epidemiological and clinical aspects of sexual dysfunctions related to the main antidepressants categories and the strategies for managing this problem, including pharmacological and alternative approaches.
Keywords: Depression, sexual dysfunction, antidepressant drugs, sexual disorders, sexual side effects, drug-induced, treatment-emergent sexual dysfunction.
