Ageing and consequential health care needs of the population have been leading policy makers and scholars to shift the focus from the acute care to long term care services and the assessment of the best financial sustainability option. Through a cluster analysis this paper discusses the financial viability of 50 Tuscan residential facilities for the elderly and their organizational and strategic choices like: ownership, size, degree of outsourcing and differentiation. Findings suggest three groups of residential homes which can be named: specialized; community and mixed facilities. These three typologies sustained significant different cost per day. Authors posit some policy and managerial implications on the basis of the empirical evidence presented.
Keywords: Residential long term care, financial sustainability, cluster analysis.
