This work presents a parent-infant psychotherapy of a premature female child who refuses follow-up visits. The treatment model refers to the Tavistock Clinic therapeutic consultations in families with under 5 year old children. Premature birth represents for parents both grief for a missed full-term birth and a painful event which emerges in its multiple dimensions among the "here and now" of this session, among parental personal history, among transgenerational ghosts recalled to the baby’s cradle. Emotional past experiences regarding preterm birth interrupt the natural pattern of psychological gestation for becoming parents and the mother especially might replace the primary maternal worries with the effort of not thinking, creating emptiness and mental sorrow which slow down the libidinal investment in the child and parenthood. Attention to interpersonal and intrapsychic relationships allowed the family to renew the emotional bound with the baby-girl dreamed during the early pregnancy and their natural abilities.
