The current process of globalisation of migrations, which transformed Europe from a sending into a receiving continent, has substantially altered both the contents and, foremost, the tasks of migration museums. In accordance with the agenda of the jointly promoted UNESCOIOM "International migration programme", these museums have been elected as special venues to foster an inter-cultural dialogue and thus facilitate integration. Within the abovementioned analytical framework, the A. takes into consideration the migration museums recently founded in some European port cities which, along with the late 1800-early 1900 Great migration, became the most important gateways to the Americas. After focusing on northern European case studies (i.e. Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Antwerp and Liverpool), the A. analyses the section on Memory and migration of Galata-Museo del mare in Genoa, currently the one and only existing in the Mediterranean Sea.
