The author proposes an analytical reading of the clinical case of S. described by Dr Olivieri. This paper focuses on the movements of transference and countertransference within the therapeutic couple. Due to massive projective identifications implemented by the patient during the very first sessions, the therapist was unconsciously led to carry out behaviours related to the pathological dynamics of the relationship between S. and his mother. The author believes that since the unconscious dynamics within the therapeutic couple were not recognized, they may have reactivated traumatic events experienced by the patient within his family, thus leading to the premature termination of the psychotherapeutic sessions. The countertransferential reactions of the therapist could instead have played an essential role by making it possible to understand the emotional experiences of the patient and then to re-elaborate them within the therapeutic relationship.
