The effect of Inspector Montalbano on tourist flows. This article measures the impact of the TV-series featuring Inspector Montalbano (1982-2013) on Ragusa and Agrigento, respectively movie-location and literary-location. The monetary impact from the added arrivals fostered by the TV-series and the literary production is also assessed. This analysis helps in deciding how appropriate is deadweight public funding of the TV-series production in order to improve the movie-location as a tourism destination. Both the TV-series and the books positively influence arrivals. Deadweight public funding of the TV-series is not theoretically justified, as the same rationale could easily be applied to justify the funding of the literary production for the benefit of incoming tourism. The destinations may offer complementary tourist products within an integrated tourist district based upon the cultural creativity they share.
