The quality and diversity of the EU’s agricultural production are its most important strengths and give a competitive edge to the EU’s producers. The European regulation on Pdo, Pgi and Tsg, resulting from globalization, is currently covered by Reg.(EU) No 1151/2012, which has replaced Regulations (EC) Nos 509/2006 and 510/2006, concerning (respectively) the traditional specialities guaranteed and the geographical indications and designations of origin concerning agricultural products and foodstuffs. Through the Reg. (EU) No 1151/2012, which is only one of the results of the review process of the European agricultural product quality policy, the revision of the quality schemes for agricultural products and foodstuffs has been achieved by the introduction of several changes, aimed at strengthening the quality schemes of European agricultural products, such as, in particular, a new discipline of STG and the introduction of the optional quality terms as a new quality scheme. However, there are serious doubts that the quality system, as devised by the Reg. (EU) No 1151/2012, is able to ensure to the European agricultural products and foodstuffs the ability to compete on the market they need, also at international level.
