The current review aimed to examine the literature on the topic of maltreatment and abuse undergone by children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). On one hand, studies have shown the higher risk of victimization to which children with Autism Spectrum Disorder are exposed to, while on the other hand findings revealed a lack of investigations providing specific informations on family-based interventions. The reviewed studies highlighted the need to establish programs providing prevention of maltreatment and abuse through the improvement of children social and problem solving skills, as well as the treatment of dysfunctions within caregiver-child relationship.
Keywords: Autism Spectrum Disorder, child maltreatment, sexual abuse, treatment, child-parent relationship.
