Family therapists are more and more called to document the effectiveness of psychotherapy through outcome research, aimed at verifying if family therapy works; and process research, aimed at describing how family therapy works. Focusing on different studies that describe the interaction between therapist and family members, and the observable changes that occur during the course of a therapeutic dialogue, this paper underlines the clinical and training implications of the process research for the systemic family therapy field.
