Aim of this article is to reflect on the personality of abused women in order to see if this abuse hinges on psychopathological traits, as shown by the major current nosographic systems. The author describes the main features of the dependent personality organization starting from the earliest descriptions provided by Kraepelin up to the most recent ones based on Swap II and DSM5 and suggests that they cannot represent the only explanation of the motives that lead a woman not to realize that she is suffering abuse. The author considers the other issues strictly connected to abuse, such as masochism, aggression and violence, envisaging also the consideration of other psychoanalytical authors that don’t totally agree with the deterministic explanation.
Keywords: Psychopathology, gender abuse, perversion, masochism, perverse relationships
