In the years following the Second Vatican Council, Italian Catholics opened themselves to Third Worldist issues and hopes coming from outside Europe. In the complex plurality that characterized the Italian Church, this produced a series of initiatives, which involved — with different timings and tones — both the ecclesiastical apparatus and the laity. In the early 1970s, while many became increasingly interested in Africa and Asia, Italian Catholics turned to the so-called "other West", Latin America. Here, in the context of guerrillas and military dictatorships, of liberation theology and dependency theory, an ideal space of participation and co-responsibility emerged, bringing about fractures and networks that deeply affected the future of the Italian Church. Through an analysis of unpublished archival sources, the press and oral testimonies, this article aims at examining the various forms and expressions of those encounters or re-encounters.
