Current relations between states and religions or religious beliefs in Europe (including Italy) are widely characterized by the method of secularism. This achievement is far from being definitive or devoid of problems. It is obviously the outcome of a very complex historical process, which started with the transformation of European Christianity. This article highlights some historiographical issues concerning this difficult road, and argues for the need to overcome binary oppositions (between clericalism and secularism), and provide a more sophisticated interpretation of the different processes taking place inside and outside the religious sphere and in the realm of civil institutions.
