The author examines Veneroni’s dictionary from the point of view of the history of the Italian language, highlighting the fact that the dictionary takes its inspiration from the Tuscan literary tradition and the way of speaking in Rome. Intended for the educated, its headwords are in Italian, German, French and Latin; archaisms are given; important verbs are conjugated; historical and mythological proper nouns are included; and proverbs are also recorded. The dictionary thus has grammatical and encyclopedic features.
