This review describes the basis of systemic family and couples therapies (SFCT). We report a substantial number of current meta-analyses and systematic reviews that all point to a strong positive conclusion about the general effectiveness of the approach. We identify 72 conditions for which SFTC has been researched. These reviews demonstrate efficacy and in many cases effectiveness in the conditions for which significant data have been published. However there are significant areas in which published research does not yet allow conclusions to be drawn. The research review demonstrates that SFCTs are effective, acceptable to clients, and cost effective for a sufficient range of conditions to give confidence that the wide application in current practice is justified and could usefully be extended.
