The article discusses the sociological approach to law that Jacques Commaille presents in his recent book À quoi nous sert le droit?. The author aims, on the one end, to renew the link with the great sociological traditions considering law as the main tool to explain the social organization. On the other end, he intends to stimulate an interdisciplinary approach trough the collaboration of social scientists and jurists that is considered essential to understand the legal changes in contemporary societies. In particular, with a broad opening to different interpretative paradigms, the author proposes a specific analytical frame focusing on the connections between law and politics: the legal duality and the two faces of droit référence and droit ressource. Jacques Commaille also asserts that law is an essential resource to resist a new techno-managerial legal rationality and to promote the rights of minorities and vulnerable subjects.
