This important 1948 article by Fritz Perls represents his views on the theory and the clincial practice of psychotherapy at the time of his meeting Paul Goodman in New York. It is the heart of the therapeutic approach that the dissident psychoanalyst Perls was developing, and that he kept until the end of his life. This is important to remember that this was the beginning of the development of Gestalt as a therapeutic approach. Perls was especially interested in integration: of the split parts and the polarities of personality, of body and mind, the spontaneous and reflexive behavior, and finally, integration through a self-regulating process, between the individual and society.
Keywords: Integration; unified approach versus dualistic approach; conflict between reflective and spontaneous behavior, reorganization of language; contact; border; awareness.
