1975, the year in which the «Circeo crime» is consumed, marks an important turning point in the long evolution of the recognition of male violence against women, a widespread but hidden and silent phenomenon. The article analyzes the process of "taking charge" of the issue: from definitions to measurement and to the public debate by the subjects of national and European governance, and lists the main means of prevention, enforcement and punishment. The Italian situation is outlined both through the recent legislation and the analysis of data from the ISTAT survey on the prevalence of the phenomenon in 2014 in relation to the situation in 2006. Finally, the perspectives and the future deadlines are considered.
