This article presents a critical discussion of the complex capability re-building path, that women victims of violence undertake when they get in touch with a Centre Against Domestic Violence (Cav). Violence against women represents a corrosive disadvantage, as defined by Wolff and de-Shalit in Disadvantages (2007), a deficit condition affecting individual capabilities, with a severe impact on many spheres of human life. Cavs constitute an important opportunity that women can make work through their decision making power and free choice: in this sense, the experience of Solidea - a gender sensitive institution - offers an emblematic model of intervention, based on a wide network of social players working together supporting women in their capability re-building path. Hence, Cavs have managed many prevention initiatives, providing women with a concrete support to develop protection factors; to recuperate their self-esteem; to attain independence; enabling them to look forward to new horizons of personal fulfilment.
Keywords: Central capabilities; corrosive disadvantages; fertile functionings; local network; Solidea.
