In recent years, various forms of cooperatives and mutuality have taken shape in an attempt to create networks and forms of local exchange of products and services which can ensure monetary sovereignty and autonomy from banks and legal currency. This process has also been fostered by the economic, political and social crisis. Some important examples are offered by mag6 in Reggio Emilia, Cooperativa Integral Catalana and the "Eco-industrial and post-capitalist colony" Calafou. Despite the peculiarity of each experience, they all support an idea of currency’s self-management which contradicts the founding principle of capitalism, that is, the logic of accumulation.

Keywords: Social currency, cooperativism, self-management, mag6, Cooperativa Integral Catalana, Calafou.
