The conception of psychotherapy as "technique" is critically confronted with a conception of psychotherapy as "art", i.e., linked to the therapist’s personality and other idiosyncratic factors. This dichotomy has been more and more discussed in recent decades due to a discontent perceived by many psychotherapists regarding the application of traditional technique to more difficult cases, and also due to the fragmentation of theoretical models. The "art versus technique" dichotomy is seen in light of the history of theory of psychotherapeutic technique, particularly of psychoanalytic theory of technique, and conceived as an implication of the changes that occurred in the indications of psychoanalysis and also as a misunderstanding of theory of technique.
Keywords: Psychotherapy as Art; Theory of Psychoanalytic Technique; Curative Factors of Psychotherapy; Common Factors of Psychotherapy; Specific Factors of Psychotherapy.
