This article reconstructs the academic biography of Carlo Pazzagli and retraces the entire course of his research activity. From an initial specific focus on the history of Tuscanagriculture in the early nineteenth century, after the 1980s his work began to adopt a broader historical perspective: first he moved towards the twentieth century to verify the consequences of the sharecropping system, and then he went back to its medieval origins and, in doing so, shifted his attention to the long history of Tuscan landed aristocracy.
