The present contribution aims to explore in an ethnographic way fragments of everyday life in the Parisian informal camps during 2016/2017 by trying to chart elements of relationship, exchange and conflict between migrants in transit and other relevant, institutional or non-institutional, actors. The camp thus becomes a political and symbolic site through which migrants activate the protection of public policies by staging a humanitarian scandal. At the same time, public institutions attempt to manage flows of transit and migration, and regulate the use of urban public space, through devices combining reception and repression, compassion and control, inclusion and exclusion.

Keywords: Urban camps; asylum seekers; migrant in transit; ethnography; humanitarian policies.
