The essay introduces researchers to the documentary sources currently preserved in the Vatican Secret Archives concerning the Papal feuds of the Piedmont region during the Early Modern period. This paper gives notice of the archival fonds and units where evidence can be found, consequently reflecting on how Early Modern jurisdictional practices prompted a widespread use of archives. This process also involved the Vatican Secret Archives: as the Holy See’s central archive it represented a bulwark against the "war of writings" that the Papacy had to fight against the sovereigns of Savoy for ownership of the Papal feuds.
Keywords: Pontifical fiefs; modern history; history of archives; archives; jurisdictional conflicts; diplomatic history
