The paper explores the role of motherhood on careers of Tuscan women in childbearing age. The empirical analysis is based on an original database: tax returns submitted by Tuscan taxpayers from 2003 to 2014. A survival analysis is used to estimate the effect of a childbirth on the permanence of mothers in the labour market. The second part of our analysis focuses on the evolution of careers, by estimating a regression model on individual annual income. The main results show how maternity make it more difficult to stay in the labor market and it constitutes a major obstacle to female professional career.
Keywords: Motherhood, female career, earnings, survivor analysis
