The presence of unaccompanied migrant children (MSNA) in Italy, visible since the 90s’, has progressively become increasingly relevant, so much so that the author defines them as the "new protagonists of contemporary mobility". The paper makes reference to the definitions of unaccompanied foreign children provided by European and Italian legislation, as well as distinctions of a more "sociological" type; it includes the data referring to the presence of children on the Italian territory; it refers to the Italian and European legislative evolution, which in the past few years has changed significantly above all concerning reception modal-ities. The paper also underlines the importance of the implementation of juridical instruments in the protection of children’s rights, in order to avoid the dangers of clandestinity and insecurity.
Keywords: Migrant children; unaccompanied migrant children; rights of migrant children; legislation concerning MSNA; MSNA reception centres; MSNA family custody.
