Public discussion of migrants tends to label them as either perpetrators or victims of aggression. Economic and social history, on the other hand, is able to offer a much more complex image of the life choices and life courses of migrants. The book by Manuela Martini reconstructs the history of Italians in the French housing sector, and is based on a huge array of sources and a highly productive methodology. It investigates, above all, the upward social mobility of some of these migrants, which was achieved as a result of pre-existing high-level organisational skills coupled with the use of a wide variety of kinship systems.
