"So cookery is not only a question of physiology, aesthetics and dynamics. It also involves politics and social and economic policy". Thus stated the introduction to the first issue of "La Cucina Italiana", the cookery magazine published in Milan, signed by the editor Umberto Notari. Cookery also involved a gender policy, and over time, alongside recipes, the magazine reflected changes in gender roles, in particular the ambiguous approach of Fascism to women. The model of the family, the culture of the body and social hierarchies can all be seen in the articles. But there are also indications of the pervasive nature of "familismo oppositivo" or the unstated opposition to the regime carried out by women inside the family. The gradual changes in both types of female behaviour, in favour of or against the regime, highlight the existence and form of what could be termed "Fascist feminism". It is impossible to fully identify the readership. The short lines selected by the magazine editors from "Piccola posta" ("Readers’ letters"), "La collaborazione delle abbonate" (Subscribers’ contributions) and "Corrispondenza tra le abbonate" ("Subscribers’ correspondence") are not sufficient to show readers’ views, or possible forms of "resistance" to, or negotiation with, Fascism and its ambiguities. Nevertheless, a general idea of the readership can be gained from the few elements present in their correspondence, and the "ideal reader" can be outlined. This preliminary article is based on a wider research project that will soon lead to a book publication, which will make a wider use of the sources.
