Drawing the image of the city requires complex methods grounded in design and planning practices at urban or neighborhood level; in such context, graphic techniques of representation can play a crucial role both in designing and social sharing of values and contents, because they reveal themselves as not neutral. About this issue, the acknowledged cornerstones are first of all Kevin Lynch’s book, ‘The Image of the City’ (1960), Gordon Cullen’s studies and Peter Bosselmann’s ‘Representation of Places’ (1998), the latter pursuing and going deeply in the research developed at Berkeley University. The paper aims to explore the more updated Anglo-Saxon literature about the issue, framing techniques of representation in the wider procedures related to experiencing places and focusing on graphic skills as a basic training for urban planners and designers.
Keywords: Image of the city; representation techniques; communication procedures
