The review evaluates the results of a research project devoted to the history of humanities at the Institute of Higher Studies in Florence between 1859 and 1924. This project has facilitated the discovery of, and the access to, many new documentary sources, and highlighted the peculiarities of the Institute compared to the literarature faculties of other Italian universities. The presence of disciplines such as anthropology, of oriental studies broadly conceived, and a strong orientation towards historical and literary studies, characterized the sixty years of life of the Philosophical and Philological Section before the transformation of the Institute into a university.
