The aim of the paper is to explore the co-evolutionary effects of the relationship between tourist destinations and its territory. This paper derives from the continuation of previous researches of ours about the topic of destination management and destination governance. The theoretical background of this paper is based on the following research question: can the "albergo diffuso"’ Italian hospitality model be considered as a prototype of co-evolution between the tourist destination and its territory? The qualitative research methodology adopted uses a multiple case study approach (Yin, 2009) based on the analysis of two alberghi diffusi. Our survey was carried out submitting a questionnaire to the owners of "alberghi diffusi"’ and to local tourism governance authorities. The results have been studied using a matrix of co-evolution. The position of the alberghi diffusi within one of the four quadrants of the co-evolutionary matrix depends on the ability of tourist enterprises and tourist destinations to create relationships within the geographical area they belong to in order to arise the level of attractiveness of the territory itself. The relatively small number of case studies represents a limit of the present paper. Hence, with a view to a subsequent future research, we will continue the proposed study by extending the analysis towards a universe of widespread hotels operating in Italy not underestimating the tourist analysis perspective.
