In this article, the authors investigated food behaviors by questioning about the different connotations that the food acquires as a social fact. Medicalization is the background scenario against which changes are being studied in relation to social relationships and the perception of the self, to lifestyles and to eating disorders. From these insights it emerges a possible interpretation of the role played by the new frontier of superfood and nutraceuticals, considering these as a form of medicalization mediated by a contemporary society increasingly attentive on one side to food practices on the other hand to the well-being of the person.
Keywords: Medicalization; superfood; nutraceuticals; diets; socio-orthorexia; lifestyles.
