New generation landscape plans, although through diverse specific settings, have introduced common elements of innovation: the adoption of a structural approach to the interpretation and discipline of landscape; the quest for a consistency between landscape assets and regional territory; the identification of strategic tools aimed at reinforcing the operational capabilities of the plan. The article illustrates these points and identifies them as characteristics that define the landscape plan as an integrated tool for territorial management at the regional level, which is hierarchically superior to other plans and programs - as dictated by Italy’s "Codice dei Beni Culturali e del Paesaggio". Finally, the article outlines future directions of further development to consolidate its role, situated at different stages before, during and after the approval of the plan.
