Based on a study of official sources and recent historiographical studies, the article examines the structure of the Royal Navy’s Medical Corps on the eve of Italy’s participation in the First World War. What emerges is a stunted and retarded planning of prevention strategies and of the care and assistance of the people involved, the responsibility for which can be attributed to the political class and to the leading members of the Armed Forces.
