This contribution highlights the complexity of writing an one’s own story. A narrative genre, before to be a literary one, which requires - against any roughly forms - the willingness of the aspiring autobiographers to discuss their past and present. It follows that the writing of an autobiography (of a non-fragmentary and episodic, or diaristic text) requires a serious and long self-reflexive and self-critical work, beyond the moral confrontation with the dimension of the lived time. Accepting, moreover, that the writing of our life denies the illusion that it is an easy and functional enterprise for narcissistic purposes same as many experiences in the field of adult education would seem to promise.

Keywords: Autobiography, illusion, duplicity, ego power, lived time.
