This paper is a critical analysis of a recent book (La presa di Troia. Un inganno venuto dal mare, Edizioni di storia e studi sociali 2017, 140 pp.) which reached a wide media coverage due to its reinterpretation of the mythical Trojan "Wooden Horse": for the author the horse was actually a ship. The hypothesis, although suggestive, is not supported by a serious historical and philological methodology and the paper aims to highlight its obvious defects: inaccurate translations - if not intentionally misleading - an at least imperfect knowledge of ancient Greek and of the Homeric tradition and an almost inexistent bibliographic apparatus, although the scientific literature on this argument is decidedly full-bodied.
Keywords: Homeric tradition, Trojan Horse, ancient history, philology, methodology.
