At the turn of the third millennium, the widespread use of the web and of the so-called social media has created completely new communication phenomena, characterized by interactivity and horizontality, that is to say by prerogatives capable of allowing a communicative relationship from many to many. On closer inspection, however, these phenomena were partially anticipated in the 1960s and 1970s, when some forms of "counter information" and alternative information were expressed based on the use of such tools as cable television, radio, telephone, video recorders, which were able, if used in a combined way, to support an unprecedented communicative leading role played on the part of citizens. In this article, the author identifies some of the aspects common to these two historical phases, characterized by a - more or less marked - emancipation of citizens from the typical one-way character of mainstream media.
