The opera Belisario, set to music by Gaetano Donizetti for the Theatre La Fenice in Venice in 1836, was based upon a libretto written by Salvatore Cammarano and inspired by a famous German tragedy. It managed to revive the international interest in the historical and fictitious events related to the General of the Byzantine Empire who served under the Emperor Justinian. The plot could still boast some political and ideological relevance and had prestigious roots in the baroque age and in the enlightenment culture. Belisarius was a perfect character for the Romantic age too, since he had never ceased to launch his message: he still embodied a fierce loyalty to the power, which could not prevent from becoming a victim to tyranny and envy, and from being an innocent outraged by a blind fate, totally indifferent to any human value.
Keywords: Belisarius, Theatre 16th-19th cents, Tragedy.
