The new consolidated law on the forests and forest supply chains (d.lgs. 3 April 2018, n. 34) reopens the debate on the role of the silvicoltural farms, assigning them the sensitive task of contributing to the realization of a ‘sustainable forest management’. However, domestic law does not clarify the concept; such notion requires an analysis of the European and international law, that establishes objectives, principles and criteria. Forestry activities must comply to those, which, at the same time, mark the difference from cultivation and breeding. The paper moves describing the context on which the new domestic law intervenes; subsequently, it isolates the most significant innovations; finally, it projects them in a framework that transcends national boundaries.
Keywords: Forest, farm, wood, silviculture, sustainability.
