Brain develops in the long run, encounters a series of critical periods, and is influenced by external as well as internal factors, as microbiota. Several investigations showed the role played by microbiota in the development of some neuro-generative processes such as the development of the blood-brain barrier, mielinization, neurogenesis, synaptogenesis, formation of neurotrophic factors, microglia maturation, serotoninergic hippocampal system development, and regulation of HPA-axis stress response. The early temporal window of the life period is therefore of great relevance for the development of the individual, not only in relation to the psychological development (as already shown by clinical and developmental psychology), but also for mechanisms of biological programming influenced by microbiota.
Keywords: Microbiota, Brain development, Brain-gut axis, Health, Diet, Neuro-degenerative disorders.
