Giuseppe Samonà’s Trentino Plan (1967) introduces the idea of a ‘city without concentration’: an ‘urbanized countryside’ populated by services and places of production. The Plan consists of a long-term ‘vision’ expressed in an ‘argumentative’ form of the discourse that prevails over the prescriptive one. It relies on the ‘conviction’ of the recipient, rather than on the mandatory strength of the Plan. The author of the paper moves from the Trentino experience, seizing some relationships with other reflections of Samonà, observing the previous and following years. Although evolving, the thought of the Sicilian author is constantly working around a very dense thematic core that has had in the Plan of Trentino a first formal deposit and has been a trigger for subsequent theoretical and planning reflections.
