The aim of the author is discussing the need for an interpretative renewal of the historical research on Italian opposition to European unifi cation. To this purpose, he proposes three cases studies. The fi rst one is the protest within the Italian academic milieu against the planned foundation of a European university. The second case study is the criticism grounded on what was seen to be a loss of legislative control over European integration and the eff ects generated by it, to the advantage of government. This loss of control nurtured a phenomenon born outside European integration, namely the ‘decline of Parliament’. The third example deals with opposition from some economic sectors asking whether Europe was worthwhile for national economic interests. Keywords: European Integration, Italian Euroscepticism, European university, Italian parliament, National economic interests.
