The article deals with the theme of "suspended" childhood, situation in which children are housed in prisons. This condition negatively affects the well-being of children and also negatively affects mothers (and possibly fathers) who are deprived of their personal freedom, but also of their ability to be parents. The path towards the "decarceration" of the adult, to protect the child and the parental needs, has led to the establishment of ad hoc structures, evidently of educational value, within which the children are hosted: the ‘protected family houses’. Even today, however, these institutions struggle to materialize due to the lack of an appropriate investment policy and to an ineffective enhancement of the professional figure of the educator, the bearer of a reflective and transformative perspective of the educational intervention to which is attributed the proprium of protected family houses.
