The work of Max van Manen, phenomenologist, educationalist, philosopher of education, could be described as an attempt to apply the methods and the analytical procedures of phenomenology to the wider field of education and to the professional sphere of caring. This line of research has aroused enthusiasm among the professionals; nevertheless, it has also caused some criticism by scholars more faithful to the orthodox formulation of the phenomenology. The paper aims to value the actual consistency of these objections by taking into account the philosophical proposal of the straight pedagogical and pragmatic engagement of phenomenology that has been named "Phenomenology of Practice" by Max van Manen.
